The Parks, Recreation & Open Space Division (PROS) offers youth, teen, and adult programs at the Golf Course, Ice Rink, Aquatic Center and other facilities throughout Los Alamos County. Special events are held throughout the summer at various locations. We also coordinate various contract instructor programs such as dance, volleyball, basketball, exercise and fitness, martial arts, softball, swimming and running.

Great American Backyard Campout

Spend a unique night camping out under the stars at Overlook Park as part of this exciting national event. Enjoy the great outdoors with fun activities, like frisbee, tic-tac-toe, camping BINGO, glow-in-the-Dark ring toss, a nature scavenger hunt, star gazing, and campfire songs and stories. If you bring a musical instrument, you can join in for a classic camp song jam!

Hawk to Hilltopper

Join the Recreation Division, LAMS Volunteers, and the Los Alamos County Fire Department in celebrating 8th grade graduation at Ashley Pond. The fun begins with a BBQ lunch and usually ends with lots of shaving cream.

Horse Show

Splash-n-Dash June 7 & 21 / July 5 & 19

Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, 7:00-8:00pm

Splash-n-dash includes a swim in the Aquatic Center and a run
along Canyon Road. Swimmers, runners, beginning multi-sport
athletes, seasoned triathletes, or anyone interested can participate.
This program is not a race, but a group training event.
There is no course support or protection from traffic of any kind.
You assume all risk and responsibility when participating, just as
you do when doing your own workouts. Please exercise good
judgement, watch out for cars at all times, and have fun!
Registration for all distances begins at 6:30pm and closes at
6:55pm, with the first swimmer sent off at 7:00pm sharp. Due
to time and space constraints, the event is limited to the first 75
registrants. Participants under the age of 18 must come prepared
with a waiver signed by a parent.

Jemez Mountain Trail Run

50k, 50 mile, and 15 Mile races

All courses are on technical trails with a substantial amount of elevation change.  The 50k and 50 mile events include extremely steep climbs and descents on rough terrain.  Runners will experience high altitude (over 10,000 feet above sea level), scree fields, stream crossings, fallen trees, and other obstacles.  The course has numerous aid stations, but there are some long stretches (greater than 5 miles) between aid stations.

Los Alamos Adult & Junior Triathlon



Join us in the once "Secret City" to celebrate the 43rd Anniversary of the oldest,continuously running triathlon. The Los Alamos Triathlon is a sprint triathlon with a unique format of bike, swim, run and is held at a starting elevation of 7,400`. The course is challenging with a rolling bike course that starts in town and takes you out along an open course surrounded by forests and mountain vistas then a return to the Walkup Aquatic Center for a 400 meter pool swim. A slightly hilly run completes the course.

Queen’s Court Competition

Young ladies, ages 10-25 years are invited to participate in the Los Alamos County Queen's Competition.

Candidates must be a Los Alamos County Resident or must attend Los Alamos Public Schools and provide a report card.  Horsemanship accounts for 60% of the scoring and personality for 40%. Each contestant will give a formal speech before a panel of judges and compete in a horsemanship contest.

Winners will then participate in the Rio Arriba County Rodeo and the Rodeo de Santa Fe in August. In September Rodeo Queens from around the state will compete at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque for the title of State Fair Queen.

The Competition begins at Brewer Arena for the riding section, and moves to the Posse Lodge for the speech and the modeling section.

Los Alamos County's Child Safety Program Safety Town is designed to provide the opportunity for students entering Kindergarten to learn about safety in their school, community, and neighborhood.

Students will learn strategies to keep themselves safe and have opportunities to practice basic safety procedures in new situations. These include fire safety, bicycle safety, animal safety, gun safety, stranger safety, pedestrian safety, bus safety, and drug safety.

Program begins June 19 - 30, 2017

Senior Appreciation Night - (SAN)

Graduation seniors and their friends are invited to celebrate the 31st year of this High School graduation celebration. SAN is co-chaired by the Los Alamos Parks, Recreation & Open Space Division and the Family YMCA and begins with a BBQ at Fuller Lodge on Saturday and ends Sunday morning with a Pancake Breakfast at the Senior Center. Volunteers and monetary donations are needed to ensure the continued success of this event.
