Los Alamos County is a city/county municipality. We employ 700 - 750 regular, temporary and casual employees. The organization is governed by a County Council made up of seven members elected by the citizens of Los Alamos. A County Manager is appointed by the Council and is the chief administrative officer for the County. Several elected positions and a number of boards and commissions are available for citizens interested in participating in the government process.
The County is comprised of the following departments: Administrative Services, Community & Economic Development, Community Services, County Manager's Office, Fire, Police, Public Works, and Utilities. Additionally, we have offices for the County Attorney, Assessor, Clerk, Municipal Judge, Probate Judge and Sheriff.
Situated at the base of the Jemez Mountains in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos is a town of about 18,000 people. Having grown out of the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our community is known worldwide for its scientific and technological accomplishments. Recreational opportunities are nearly unlimited. Los Alamos is home to the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, an 18-hole golf course, an outdoor refrigerated ice skating rink, numerous hiking and bike trails, and many organized sports leagues and events. We are located within a short drive from the Bandelier National Monument, the Valles Caldera National Preserve and the Jemez Mountain Recreation Area. Cultural activities abound with concerts, art fairs and exhibits, lectures, festivals, dance performances and theater events scheduled throughout the year. Additionally, we are located near the culturally rich communities of Taos and Santa Fe. There are many clubs in Los Alamos—with something for nearly everyone. Continuing education opportunities are available at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos and at colleges in neighboring communities. Los Alamos has been named as one of the 2012 Top 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance.
