The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) operates the county-owned electric, gas, water & wastewater systems under the jurisdiction and control of the Board of Public Utilities.


ABOUT THE BPU

Purpose: Governing body of the Department of Public Utilities "which shall operate the County-owned electric, gas, water and sewer utility systems under jurisdiction and control of the Board of Public Utilities."

Authorization: Los Alamos County Charter (Article V) and Los Alamos County Ordinance No. 54, 11/1/66.

Composition: Five members, must be registered to vote in the County.

Member Term: Five years

BPU SELF-EVALUATIONS

Section 3.9. of the Board of Public Utilities (BPU)Policies & Procedures Manual (PPM) requires that the BPU conduct an annual self-evaluation. The purpose and reasons for the self-evaluation include:

  • Promote understanding of roles and responsibilities
  • Provide orientation for new members
  • Address and perhaps help resolve Board conflicts
  • Clarify what members expect from the group and self
  • Identify priorities for the BPU's future efforts
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in BPU performance
  • Help identify needed changes to the PPM
  • Self-evaluation aligns with at least three of the Baldrige "Criteria for Performance Excellence."

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

On May 21st, 2014, the Board of Public Utilities first approved a Policies and Procedures Manual. This manual is reviewed and revised annually and contains the current policies adopted by the Board to fulfill its responsibility to exercise jurisdiction and control of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) in accordance with Los Alamos County Charter, Article V - Utilities.

2017 BPU Regular Meeting Calendar

The BPU normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building (1000 Central Ave.) in Council Chambers.  Special meetings are scheduled as needed. 

The ticklers for upcoming regular meetings are available 2 weeks prior to regular meetings. These are subject to change and you can receive them via e-mail by contacting Jaime Kephart at the e-mail above.

Final agenda packets for regular meetings are normally posted the Friday prior to meeting.

Draft minutes can be obtained 10 days after a meeting. Approved minutes are normally posted the Thursday after they are approved at the regular monthly meeting. Please contact Jaime Kephart for any agenda or minutes requests.
