Posted on 09/22/2020
Los Alamos County has been recognized as the No. 1 Healthiest Community in the country by U.S. News and World Report, in collaboration with the Aetna Foundation.

Healthiest Communities is an interactive platform developed by the two entities that evaluates nearly 3,000 communities nationwide across ten categories and 84 metrics - from education and public health to infrastructure and economy - to assess which communities offer their citizens the greatest opportunity to live a productive, healthy life.

According to the U.S. News & World report, Los Alamos received a perfect score in 12 metrics, including those reflecting drinking water quality, affordable housing availability, access to parks, and population with an advanced degree. It also ranked among the best for low racial segregation (No. 3) and low preventable hospital admissions (No. 21). Los Alamos also ranks among the top 50 communities in the Equity category with a score of 85.4 out of a possible 100. This makes it a standout among the top 10 healthiest communities, which average their lowest score in the Equity category.

Data was gathered and analyzed by the University of Missouri Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES). The rankings are available on the U.S. News Healthiest Communities platform:
