The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

This course is designed to be flexible for participants. Participants are required to complete work online prior to the start of each class; half of the class has to be completed online at participants' discretion and half of the class is conducted at the facility for practice testing. Each participant must complete the lifeguard training pre-course.

Pre-test: 5/21/2024 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm (registration fee $25 per participant)

Prerequisite 1:

  • Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards using either front crawl or breaststroke, demonstrating breath control.
  • After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading.
  • After maintaining the position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.

Prerequisite 2 (Time Event):
Complete the following sequence within 1 minute and 40 seconds, without goggles.

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
  • Surface dive (head or feet first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface.
  • Place the object on the pool deck and exit the water without using the steps of ladder.

All participants must register with a personal email address to access the Red Cross Learning Center.

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid/ CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers valid for 2 years.

Must be 15 years old by completion of the class. Need a minimum of 6 participants to hold the class.
