There are many ways for citizens to become actively involved in the business of government. In addition to the opportunities that citizens have to express their thoughts and concerns at County Council meetings and public meetings, Los Alamos County residents may apply to serve on one of many Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs).
Terms for BCC members range from one to five years. Interested citizens may apply for a position on any BCC that currently has a vacancy. After completing an application, individuals are interviewed by County officials. BCC appointments require a majority vote of the County Council.

Aquatic Center Advisory Subcommittee - Discontinued 2023
The purpose of the Aquatic Center Advisory Subcommittee (ACAS) is to gather public input and advise the Parks and Recreation Board (the Board) on policy issues relating to the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center. The ACAS shall be established on a year-to-year basis upon affirmative vote of the Board and approval by Council.
Ice Rink and Recreation Advisory Subcommittee
The purpose of the Ice Rink and Recreation Advisory Subcommittee (IRRAS) is to gather public input and advise the Parks and Recreation Board (the Board) on policy issues relating to the Los Alamos County ice rink facility and general recreation programming. The IRRAS shall be established on a year-to-year basis upon affirmative vote of the Board and approval by Council.
Golf Course Advisory Subcommittee
The purpose of the Golf Course Advisory Subcommittee (GCAS) is to gather public input and advise the Parks and Recreation Board (the Board) on policy issues relating to the Los Alamos County Golf Course. The GCAS shall be established on a year-to-year basis upon affirmative vote of the Board and approval by Council.
Open Space Advisory Subcommittee
The purpose of the Open Space Advisory Subcommittee (OSAS) is to gather public input and advise the Parks and Recreation Board (the Board) on policy issues relating to Los Alamos County resources and facilities that do not have an on-site manager. In particular, this subcommittee is concerned with: trails used by hikers, bikers, equestrians and runners, open space including viewsheds, corridors for wildlife movement, wildfire fuel management, and ecosystem processes, protection of cultural and natural resources and facilities such as a bicycle flow trail or other facilities related to outdoor activities in open space. The OSAS shall be established on a year-to-year basis upon affirmative action of the Board and approval by Council.
Equine & Livestock Advisory Subcommittee
The purpose of the Equine & Livestock Advisory Subcommittee (ELAS) is to gather public input and advise the Parks and Recreation Board (the Board) on policy issues relating to Los Alamos County equine facilities, trails, resources and education. The ELAS shall be established on a year-to-year basis upon affirmative action of the Board and approval by Council.
Description
To encourage the integration of art into the architecture of municipal structures, increase the general public awareness of art, to visually enhance the community, to capture a part of our history for future generations, to promote the establishment of a collection of art with the works of artists who live or work, or who have lived or worked in Los Alamos County having a priority. The Art in Public Places fund is created for the express purposes of acquiring, installing and maintaining county-owned works of art and for the administrative support, cataloging, display and use attendant to the County's ownership of the works of art. The account shall include one percent of the budget of any capital improvement project and one-half of one percent of the budget of any such road project.

To receive input from the public and based on that input, make recommendations to Council that support the fulfillment of the library's mission in the community; to provide information and advice on items requested by the Council, and review and recommend public policies; to gather and provide public input on the development of library service objectives and the library's long range plan; interact with other boards and commissions on items that affect the libraries.
