Voter Registration

Voter registration books close preceding the 2024 Primary Election on May 7, 2023. Residents who are not registered, have moved, or changed their mailing address can submit a voter registration by mail or apply online at  www.NMVote.org. After May 7th, voters may register or change their address on the same day that they vote. Political party changes will not process until the pollbooks reopen on November

NOTICE: If you are registering for the first time in New Mexico, and you submit the registration form by mail, then you must submit with the form a copy of (1) a current and valid photo identification; or (2) a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card or other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo that shows your name and current address. If you do not submit one of these forms of identification with your mailed-in, first time registration, then you would be required to present one of the forms of identification when voting in person or absentee.

Become a Voter Registration Agent

The Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office conducts Third Party Registration Agent Training for individuals or groups wishing to register potential voters or assist a voter in changes to their voter registration record. Third Party Agents are individuals who solicit and provide assistance to another person in the completion of a Voter Registration Form. Third Party Agents help fulfill an important role as partners in our outreach effort.

How It Works

New Mexico Election Law states that if you would like to register voters, you must be registered as a Third-Party Registration Agent through the Secretary of State or the County Clerk.

The Third Party Registration Agent form must be completed and notarized. Once submitted to the Clerk, you will be issued a Voter Registration Agent (VRA) number which must be filled in on every registration form assigned to you. The VRA number is assigned to an individual, regardless of which organization you are working for.

Initially, a pack of 20 forms will be assigned to you. At any time, you may request another packet, but you will need to come to the County Clerk's office and personally request and sign for them. Remember all forms will be issued and tracked to your name and agent ID number. The Secretary of State and the County Clerk's recommend keeping a ledger or log on any concerns with your issued forms.

Registration Requirements

The qualified elector’s last four digits of their Social Security Number (NEW registrants to New Mexico must provide their FULL SSN), OR New Mexico Driver’s License number, OR New Mexico Identification number AND full Date of Birth (NMSA 1-4-5.4B)

If the certificate of registration does not contain a social security number, the county clerk shall ascertain the qualified elector's social security number from the qualified elector's previous certificate of registration, from the motor vehicle division of the taxation and revenue department or from the secretary of state.   (NMSA 1-4-11D)

If we (the clerk’s office) are unsuccessful in ascertaining this information, we will reach out to the voter to obtain it, as it is required to vote. Otherwise, they will have to vote via provisional ballot and their ballot shall only be counted if the required information is ascertained. (NMSA 1-4-11F)

Voters must print legibly. For the address voter registrations must also, contain a physical address, a description, or a map of where they live. A PO Box may be put on the line asking where they get mail.

When voter registrations are returned to the County Clerk we will determine what precinct the voter lives in based on the information provided. If we are only provided with a PO Box for an address, our office will mail the voter a letter requesting more information, and the person will not be a registered voter until they provide it. Please make sure every voter registration has a clear physical address.

After completing the voter registration, tear off the yellow receipt at the lower left side of the registration and give it to the voter.

There are individuals who choose to use the Federal NVRA form, this is also acceptable.

NOTE: Once completed, voter registrations must be
mailed or delivered to the County Clerk's Office within 48 hours.
