Los Alamos County is currently seeking dedicated individuals to fill four seats on the Environmental Sustainability Board. The term for these positions is two years, running from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2026. Members may serve up to two terms. Meeting on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave., Los Alamos, the Board plays a key role in advising the County Council on environmental sustainability issues.

Application process:
Interested Los Alamos residents must complete an online application on the Boards & Commissions web page. Select the yellow “Apply” button midway through the page, complete the form, and select “Submit” by July 15th. Interviews with qualified candidates will be scheduled with county officials and then Los Alamos County Council will make the final selection and appoint board members to fill the vacant positions at the first council meeting in August.

Board responsibilities:

The board serves as a central point of contact for residents and offers a platform for community involvement and influence in shaping the county’s environmental policies. This includes

  • Gathering input: Listening to citizens' suggestions and feedback on ways to improve the county government’s environmental sustainability practices, including proposed policies, programs, and services.
  • Advising: Providing recommendations to the County Council on a variety of environmental sustainability issues.
  • Educating: Suggesting methods to educate and involve the community in environmental sustainability initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues to contribute to the county’s sustainability efforts. The County is currently developing a Climate Action Plan, scheduled for completion in October 2024, which aims to reduce the county’s greenhouse gas emissions.
