Final CAP going to County Council for adoption consideration
Published on November 08, 2024
After more than a year of extensive community engagement and research, Los Alamos County's Sustainability Manager Angelica Gurule will present the final Climate Action Plan (CAP) to the County Council for adoption consideration. She will also ask the Council to consider adopting an emission reduction target of carbon neutrality by 2050. The presentation is scheduled for the Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers, located at 1000 Central Avenue, Los Alamos.
As directed by the County Council, the efforts to create a plan kicked off in June 2023 with the goal of reducing the County's carbon footprint and developing adaptation and resilience strategies. The CAP is built on several essential steps and analyses, including a baseline policy assessment, greenhouse gas inventories, strategy and action development and refinement, greenhouse gas and action modeling, cost modeling, and target setting. Throughout the process, community engagement has been integral in shaping the plan's priorities and actionable items. The comprehensive plan is available on the County Sustainability webpage at

The final Climate Action Plan highlights key initiatives across several areas:
-
Buildings & Energy
-
Transportation and Land Use
-
Materials and Consumption
-
Natural Systems & Water Resources
-
Community Resilience, Adaptation & Wellbeing
-
Cross-Cutting Strategies
County officials encourage residents to review the plan and attend the upcoming Council meeting to learn more about the proposed strategies and lend their support as the Council deliberates on this essential step toward a sustainable future.
