Locations for those seeking protection from inclement weather

 During inclement weather, individuals that are stranded or otherwise facing the elements may find themselves in need of a safe place to stay warm. Los Alamos County Social Services division has identified several locations where individuals can temporarily seek shelter to warm up. While these sites may not offer full amenities such as restrooms, they provide a safe environment to avoid the elements.
The following locations are currently open to the public:
  • Los Alamos Police Station vestibule – 2500 Trinity Drive
    Open 24 hours, seven days a week
  • Municipal Courthouse – 2500 Trinity Drive
    Open to individuals until 5 p.m.; doors lock automatically after 5 p.m., but those inside may remain
  • U.S. Post Office vestibule – 199 Central Park Square
    Open 24 hours, seven days a week
  • Smith’s Food & Drug seating area near Starbucks – 751 Trinity Drive
    Open from 6 a.m. to midnight
  • Social Services Office vestibule – 1183 Diamond Drive, Suite E
    Open 24 hours, seven days a week
Visit the Social Services webpage for a list of additional resources that may offer support with financial, housing, food, or legal assistance. Appointments can also be scheduled online to meet with Social Services staff or by calling 505-662-8068, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
