Non-essential county government services and facilities closed Nov. 7
Published on November 07, 2024
Los Alamos Acting County Manager Linda Matteson has ordered the closure of all non-essential County government facilities on Thursday, Nov. 7, due to inclement weather. This includes the Municipal Building, Aquatic Center, libraries, Golf Pro Shop, Eco Station and White Rock Convenience Center, senior centers, Social Services, Nature Center, Teen Center, youth activity centers, History Museum, Fuller Lodge and Art Center, and visitor centers. County staff recommends that individuals call any facility not listed to determine whether it will open or close today. Many County services will be impacted:
- Atomic City Transit Dial-A-Ride on-demand service will be provided from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please call ACT (505) 661-7433 to schedule transportation requests.
- Environmental Services residential trash collection will be collected, but routes may be adjusted based on accessibility and safety, obstacles blocking access, snow accumulation, the inability to open dumpster enclosure doors, or slick road conditions on steep roads that affect access. Examples of areas that could be impacted include:
o Residential: Routes along 35th-39th Streets, including Alabama.
o Commercial: Canyon Village Apartments, Chapel Apartments, Betty Ehart Senior Condos, Ridge Park Condos, the Shooting Range in Rendija Canyon, or any location with similar access issues.
The Environmental Services Division asks for your patience and understanding, as these weather conditions may delay or impact our ability to provide timely service. Any scheduled routes not collected today will be collected on Friday, Nov. 8.
- Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, originally scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, is rescheduled for next Friday, Nov. 15.
- LA Cares monthly food distribution is rescheduled for next Friday, Nov. 15.
- The Customer Care Center representatives will answer phones and emails remotely between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- All emergency services are available.
- All other County facilities and services are closed.
Los Alamos Police Department strongly recommends that all residents and visitors avoid unnecessary travel. This precaution ensures personal safety and supports emergency and County Traffic and Street crews efficiently continuing to clear the major roads and streets according to the FY 2024 Snow and Ice Plan.
Help our snow team clear the roads faster and keep you safe with these tips:
- Park vehicles off the street when possible.
- Stagger parked vehicles if off-street parking is unavailable.
- Keep storm drains clear of snow and debris.
- Avoid shoveling snow into the street.
- Delay non-critical travel until the weather conditions improve.
The County's My Commute webpage provides live updates on the conditions of major roadways in Los Alamos County. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and exercise caution if travel is necessary during the storm.
