Los Alamos County is pleased to announce and invite the community to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Urban Trail. The ceremony will take place on February 26 at 2:00 PM on the Urban Trail Boardwalk next to the Canyon Road Tennis Courts. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments at Fuller Lodge.

This event marks a significant milestone for the community, highlighting a valuable addition to the local transportation system that enhances mobility, recreation, and environmental sustainability.

During the ceremony, special recognition will be given to key individuals and organizations that played a crucial role in bringing the Urban Trail project to fruition.

The project was made possible through funding from the New Mexico Department of Transportation through two Federal Highway Administration grant programs: the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program and Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). CMAQ is a flexible funding source designed to help meet Clean Air Act requirements, while TAP supports community-based projects that expand travel choices for bicyclists and pedestrians while enhancing cultural, historical, and environmental aspects of transportation infrastructure.

The project was developed in two phases. Phase I features a 10-foot-wide concrete multi-use trail spanning 0.434 miles, through the downtown area connecting Trinity Drive and 20th Street through the greenspace at Fuller Lodge and continues to Ponderosa and Spruce Streets. Phase II extends the trail an additional 0.46 miles, linking Ponderosa Street and Spruce Street to the Aquatic Center via a wooded area near the tennis courts and along Canyon Road. The prominent features of this phase includes a rapid flashing beacon to enhance safe crossing of Canyon Road and a 370-linear-foot elevated precast concrete boardwalk to facilitate access through the rough terrain.

Join us on February 26 to celebrate this incredible achievement and experience the new Urban Trail firsthand!
