Important Upcoming Dates - 2018 General Election

Thursday, March 1, 2018:

Secretary of State publishes petition forms and the required number of signatures for Independent and Minor Party Candidates


Thursday, June 28, 2018:

Filing Day for Independent Candidates, Minor Party Candidates, Judicial Retention Candidates, and General Election Write-In Candidates

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. County Clerk’s Office (second floor, Municipal Building)


Independent candidates for federal offices, statewide offices, members of the legislature, public regulation commission, district judge, district attorney, member of the state board of education, magistrate or county offices shall file declarations of candidacy and nominating petitions with the proper filing officer during the period commencing at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. on the twenty-third (23) day following the primary election. Candidates for statewide and legislative offices must also file a financial disclosure statement. 

Declarations of intent to be a write-in candidate for the general election shall file the declaration of intent between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the twenty-third (23) day following the primary election. No person shall be a write-in candidate in the general election who was a candidate in the primary election.

Minor parties shall certify to the proper filing officer the names of their party's nominees, together with a petition containing a list of signatures and addresses of voters totaling not less than 1% of the total number of votes cast at the last preceding general election for governor or president in the state for statewide offices, county for countywide offices or in the district for offices other than statewide or county offices with the proper filing officer the twenty third day following the primary election between 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. Persons certified as nominees shall be members of that party before the day the Governor issues the proclamation.

Deadline for a candidate to withdraw from appearing on the General Election ballot


Wednesday, September 5, 2018:

Drawing for Party Position on the General Election ballot by the NM Secretary of State


Tuesday, October 9, 2018:

Voter Registration Closes

Absentee Voting  (Early Voting)  Begins

County Clerks Begin Mailing Absentee Ballots


Saturday, October 20, 2018:

Early Voting at Additional Locations Begins


Friday, November 2, 2018:

Last Day County Clerks May Mail an Absentee Ballot


Saturday, November 3, 2018:

Early Voting Ends


Sunday, November 4 and Monday, November 5, 2018: 

Voting is closed


Tuesday, November 6, 2018:

General Election Day

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Absentee ballots are due to the County Clerks by 7:00 p.m.

SPECIAL NOTICE:  Pursuant to the New Mexico Election Code (NMSA 1-4-16B), every person appearing as a candidate on the primary or general election ballot shall be a candidate only under the name and party affiliation designation appearing on the existing voter registration on file in the county clerk's office on the date of the governor's proclamation of a primary election.
