BUDGET BILLING

Budget Biling GraphicThe Budget Billing program establishes an equal monthly utility payment, creating budgetary control for DPU customers. The only requirements are that the account balance is zero when joining the program and that the customer has lived in the same place for at least twelve months. 

Budget Billing was suspended temporarily last May 2018, so the county could transition to a new utility billing software. The DPU will start the program again around SEPTEMBER 2019, after the system has a full 12-months of consumption data. 

Customers who were enrolled in the program prior to May 2018, and are in good standing, will automatically be re-enrolled, unless the customer notifies DPU
otherwise. For customers who were not in the Budget Billing program, but would like to be, may do so by contacting the Customer Care Center any time after SEPTEMBER 2019.

When joining Budget Billing, the monthly payment is determined by totaling the previous year’s bills and dividing that total by 12. The resulting average amount will be billed to the customer each month for the next 12 months.  Payments must be made on or before the due date shown on each month’s bill or the account will fall out of the Budget Billing program. 

At the end of the 12-month period from the date the customer enrolled, DPU will recalculate the Budget Billing average to determine the monthly payments for the next 12 months moving forward.   

Budget Billing members only pay for the services and commodities used during the Budget Billing year. If there is an under- or overpayment, this amount is added or credited on the first bill in the new Budget Billing year.

UTILITIES ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The purpose of the UAP is to provide assistance to low income customers of the Utility during the months of October through March, or year-round for Senior Citizens over age 65. Funding is provided voluntarily from customers. To qualify for monthly assistance, the household income of the applicant must be below 50% of the median household income for the Santa Fe Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes both Santa Fe and Los Alamos counties. The Department will verify income levels by requesting either copies of tax returns or pay stub.
