Officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) warn the community of a phone scam targeting customers. Several individuals have notified the Department that they received a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a DPU employee. The phone caller then states that the account is overdue and that the customer needs to provide a social security number and a credit card number, otherwise the utility services will be terminated.

Department officials indicate that anyone who receives a suspicious call should not provide personal information over the phone, such as a social security number, an account number, or a credit card number. Rather, individuals should hang up and contact the Customer Care Center at 505.662.8333.

DPU staff does reach out to customers over the phone regarding overdue balances, but they will never ask for a customer’s social security number, account number nor demand a credit card number, according to Acting Deputy Utilities Manager Heather Garcia. “When our Customer Care representatives reach out to customers, we already have their account information, and we present multiple ways a customer can pay their bill, including coming into the office or choosing to pay online.”

The Los Alamos County Police Department has been made aware of the scam and are working with DPU to monitor the situation. Customers with questions or concerns can contact the Customer Care Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in person at 1000 Central Avenue, or by phone or email, 505.662.8333, CustomerCare@lacnm.us.
